The Department of Legislation, Political Action and Communication coordinates the Council's legislative, political and public relations activities.

AFSCME's Legislative Department works year-round monitoring and influencing public policy on behalf of our members. Legislative representatives attend hearings to offer oral and written testimony on proposed legislation; work with legislators to draft and sponsor legislation and amendments to legislation; oppose legislation which would threaten members' jobs and benefits; and lobby the House of Representatives and State Senate to support AFSCME sponsored legislation. In addition, Council 93 is active in supporting the union's national legislative objectives.

On the political front, AFSCME works to help legislators who support our ideas and interests. For example, during election season the Council organizes phone banks, publicity events, poll workers, volunteers, and mails support letters to assist these legislators in getting elected and re-elected to office. Our effectiveness in these areas relies upon the grassroots activity of our members. Donating you time to volunteer on a campaign of an AFSCME supported candidate is most important.

The Communications component of the Department:

  • Writes and publishes the "93 News" newspaper, a publication of Council 93 mailed to every AFSCME member;
  • Develops and implements public relations and communications programs for local unions to address issues such as privatization, contract battles or legislation;
  • Responds to press inquiries;
  • Assists local unions with press advisories and press releases as well as working with local unions to respond to stories in the press.
