National Library Workers Day Tuesday April 14, 2009.
On Tuesday, April 14, communities across the country will celebrate National Library Workers Day. The day is part of National Library Week and is intended to honor the contributions of AFSCME members including librarians, support staff and others who "make libraries happen."
AFSCME represents more library workers than any other union and is a leading advocate for libraries and library workers. Indeed, library occupations have one of the highest rates of unionization in the United States (38.7% in 2008).
The current economic downturn has put extra pressure of AFSCME library members as they confront both shrinking budgets and a dramatic increase in library usage as communities turn to libraries for internet access, learning and entertainment.
National Library Workers Day provides a wonderful opportunity to honor AFSCME members who are doing more with less in difficult times.
The International Union has produced bookmarks for the occasion to distribute to members and, if the library will permit, to the public. The bookmarks celebrate our library worker members and can be used year-round.
