WHO WE ARE

The American Federation of State, County, and Muncipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 93 represents 45,000 workers in the states of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. AFSCME is committed to fighting the good fight and bringing the union message of decent wages, benefits, and justice to every front porch in our land!

AFSCME Council 93 is also committed to a democratic structure that disperses power to each and every one of our members. In fact, our success depends upon the participation of our members because our members set basic policies. Our members elect their officers, send delelgates to conventions, decide dues rates, and determine what business local unions will attend to.

The Preamble to AFSCME's own Constitution states, "Unions are under a solemn obligation to represent members forcefully and effectively in negotiations with manangement and to conduct internal union affairs according to democratic standards."

Our constitution also includes a "Bill of Rights for Union Members" that details how unions are to be run, how elections are to be held, and how all members are guaranteed a strong voice in union affairs. Back to top

AFSCME COUNCIL 93 BRINGS DEMOCRACY TO THE WORKPLACE!

New Members - Richard Morin, Nancy Fraser

Staff Rep. - Jim Beaulieu

City of Lewiston, Maine - UNION YES!

The city’s top semi-professional employees voted to join AFSCME Council 93.

The new unit will represent 72 city employees - including parks and fleet superintendents, building inspectors, city engineers, city auditor and administrative assistants etc.

The theme we heard was that they wanted to level the table; currently the City Council has the sole decision on their benefits, wages and everything else. Now they have a voice.

The new AFSCME unit will become the fifth city union. Only 21 employees, mostly department heads do not belong to a union.

AFSCME Council 93 Welcomes New Members in Maine and New Hampshire

AFSCME Council 93 welcomed 150 new members in New Hampshire when workers at the Cheshire County Maplewood Nursing Home voted overwhelmingly on September 26 to form a union with AFSCME. Pictured above are just some of the new members and officers including from left to right: Donna Gutkowski, Heather Dixon, Vice President Hilda Calderon-Rice, Howard Grace, Nancy Krochmal and President Roger Lesmerises.

Another fifty Augusta, Maine employees of First Student Bus Company will see their lives improved through union membership after workers at the company voted to form a union with AFSCME. Pictured from left to right in the above photo are First Student union activists Helen Perry, Betty Bowen, and Pat Albion. All three women played a critical role in the organizing campaign.

Majority at Maplewood Nursing Home sign up

On May 30, 2007, workers from Maplewood Nursing Home in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, asked for voluntary recognition from the county administrator. Since early this year organizing committee members have signed up a strong majority of workers on union cards. The health care workers are forming a union so their community can provide quality care and quality jobs to its' residents. Union representatives will be meeting with county officials on June 19, 2007, to discuss recognition and unit clarification.

New Online Leadership Academy Training Programs Offered by AFSCME International Union

Delegates to AFSCME’s 2006 International Convention approved the historic Power to Win plan of the 21st Century Initiative — a bold, new strategy to grow our union and increase our bargaining and political power.

One of the results is the new AFSCME Leadership Academy for leaders, activists and staff. The Academy offers hour-long, online training modules on a number of timely and useful topics including:

  • Representing Workers in Disciplinary Hearings
  • Power through Organizing
  • Advocating for Health Care Reform
  • Effective Communications
  • The Power of Grassroots Lobbying

and much, much, more. Go to AFSCME at http://www.afscme.org/academy.cfm for more information, including online registration forms, or call Alva Arellano at 617-367-3686.
